Often heard long before it is seen, the Great Spotted Woodpecker is one of the woodland’s most distinctive birds. This male, easily recognised by the red patch on the back of its head, clings confidently to the tree as it searches the bark for insects.
Woodpeckers rarely stay still for long, constantly moving and tapping as they work their way along the trunk. Moments like this offer a rare chance to appreciate the bold black, white and red markings of one of Britain’s most striking woodland birds.
